Picture books for KDP

A children’s book maker that exports print-ready files for Amazon KDP

InkStak writes and illustrates your picture book, then exports the two files Amazon KDP asks for: a print-ready interior PDF and a wrap-around cover sized to your trim, paperback or hardcover. It also writes a setup sheet with a description, seven keywords and suggested categories to paste into KDP.

How do I make a picture book for KDP?

  1. Write it in InkStak. Create your characters, choose an age, genre and illustration style, and turn on KDP mode. Every scene gets a full-spread picture, and the default of 10 scenes is enough for a KDP picture book.
  2. Make it right. Edit any scene’s words, redraw any picture with a note, and refine the cover. Publisher includes up to 10 picture redraws per KDP story.
  3. Export and upload. On a desktop or laptop, choose paperback or hardcover, the trim size and the paper, approve the cover and the back-cover blurb, and save the interior and cover PDFs. Upload both to KDP.

What does the KDP export include?

  • A print-ready interior PDF. Picture books are exported with bleed for edge-to-edge art, safe margins and a gutter that grows with the page count, text that never runs outside the safe area, and KDP’s page order: title, copyright and dedication, then the story.
  • A wrap-around cover. Back cover, spine and front cover in one file, sized to your trim with bleed. The spine width is worked out from your page count and paper.
  • Every KDP trim size. From 5″ × 8″ to 8.5″ × 11″ for paperback, including the classic 8.5″ square, and 5.5″ × 8.5″ to 8.25″ × 11″ for hardcover. Choose Premium Color, Standard Color, or black and white on white or cream paper.
  • Print-resolution pictures. Every illustration is rendered at 300 DPI for the size you picked, with faces and key details kept clear of the fold.
  • A KDP setup sheet. A text file with a title and subtitle, a description within KDP’s limit, exactly 7 keywords, 3 suggested categories, the age range, and the answers to KDP’s questions about AI-generated content.
  • Collections. Bundle several stories into one book with a contents page, a divider for each story and a cover that features the main characters.

KDP export runs on a desktop or laptop browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari). Building print-resolution PDFs needs more memory than phones and tablets have.

Can I sell a coloring book or an audiobook too?

Yes. The KDP export has a coloring book option that redraws each picture as print-resolution line art, so the same story can be sold as a coloring book. On Publisher, Audiobook export narrates the whole book into one MP3 per chapter with a checklist of the technical requirements for audiobook stores such as ACX. The files need a mastering pass before you submit them.

Questions people ask

Yes. KDP’s content guidelines require you to tell Amazon about AI-generated text, images or translations when you publish, and InkStak’s setup sheet includes those answers. Read KDP’s content guidelines before you publish.

KDP’s full list: 5″ × 8″ up to 8.5″ × 11″ for paperback, including the 8.5″ square, and 5.5″ × 8.5″, 6″ × 9″, 6.14″ × 9.21″, 7″ × 10″ and 8.25″ × 11″ for hardcover.

Yes, if the book is long enough: KDP hardcovers need at least 75 pages, and InkStak shows the page estimate. Shorter books can be paperbacks from 24 pages.

KDP can give you a free ISBN, and the setup sheet explains the choice. You can also use your own.

You can write and illustrate the book anywhere, but the KDP export itself needs a desktop or laptop browser.
