Decodable stories

Decodable stories matched to the phonics lesson your child is on

Turn on Kid Reads and choose a reading level and the lesson your child has reached. InkStak writes an illustrated story that uses only the sound patterns taught up to that lesson, plus the sight words, and checks every word. By default each story opens with a page of its words to practice first.

How does InkStak make a decodable story?

  1. Turn on Kid Reads. It is the first switch on the Create screen. The age slider becomes four reading levels.
  2. Choose the level and the lesson. Slide to the exact lesson your child is on; the line under the slider names the sound pattern it adds. All the way right is the whole level.
  3. Read it together. Start with the Words to look for page, then read the story. Every word is one your child can sound out at that point, or a sight word they are learning.

What are the reading levels?

LevelWhat it addsUFLI lessons
1: Beginnershort vowels in 3-letter words and a handful of sight words1–34
2: Early Readerblends, double letters, ck, and sh, ch, th, ng, nk35–53
3: Growing Readersilent-e words, -ed and -ing endings, two-syllable words54–76
4: Independentr-controlled vowels, vowel teams and silent letters77–98

Each level adds a few new sound patterns to everything the levels before it use. Stories are short at the very start of Level 1, about 30 words and 3 pictures, and grow as your child moves through the lessons, up to about 350 words at Level 4.

UFLI Foundations is a program of the University of Florida Literacy Institute. InkStak’s reading levels follow its published scope and sequence; InkStak is not affiliated with or endorsed by UFLI or the University of Florida.

Why are they useful?

  • Practice that matches the lesson. A child can sound out every word, so reading is decoding, not guessing from the pictures.
  • A word page first. The story’s own words, grouped by sound, then its heart words: the ones learned by sight. Read them together, then find them in the story.
  • Stories that still move. Every page moves the story on rather than repeating itself, and a plot too big for the level is told in a simpler version, in words your child can read.
  • Their own characters. Character names are always allowed, so a child can read a story about themselves, a sibling or the family dog.
  • Ready to print. Save a PDF or Word document for the classroom or the fridge; the word page comes with it.
